A man arrested for allegedly trying to break into a Norco home is suspected of burglarizing other homes throughout the city, sheriff’s officials said today.

James Edward Thornton, 46, was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of burglary, being a convicted felon in possession of a gun and receiving stolen property after Riverside County sheriff’s deputies allegedly caught him attempting to break into a residence in the 700 block of Fourth Street.

Thornton is being held in lieu of $5,000 bail at the Southwest Detention Center in Murrieta.

According to sheriff’s Sgt. Mike Manning, deputies were called to the Fourth Street location by residents who noticed an unfamiliar man skulking around a home and became concerned.

Thornton, who was allegedly in possession of burglary tools, drugs and stolen property, was arrested without incident, Manning said.

A search warrant was obtained to examine the contents of the suspect’s home, where deputies “uncovered several additional items of stolen property linking Thornton to other burglaries originating in the city of Norco,” the sergeant alleged.

He said the break-ins occurred on May 13, May 24 and May 29.

Deputies seized “several different types of dangerous weapons,” including a loaded firearm, at the suspect’s residence, according to Manning.
